It has been evaluated that, every year, about 30% of the world's food production is wasted and that it is not getting
any better (Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, 2011).
Companies are increasingly aware of the urgent need to change the way food is produced and offered. That's why
every actor of the food value chain is proposing sustainable solutions to fight against food waste at all scales.
In this sense, digital platforms are a new sustainable digital business model combining food recovery and
corporate responsibility.
Through this work, the key attributes of digital platforms in food waste recovery business model and how digital
platforms can fight and reduce food waste will be studied. More specifically, this study will contribute to
discovering the obstacles and opportunities for their use, highlighting the challenges of this new sustainable
business model, and understanding the main strategies implemented by these companies.
The author conducted a qualitative research interviewing six digital platforms companies with a sustainable
business model, including two top names: Too Good To Go and Karma.
Collected data were analyzed and processed in order to highlight points of accordance and differences. Findings
revealed the main characteristics of these companies, outlined the obstacles, the opportunities, the challenges and,
above all, the strategies implemented concerning the marketing, the finance and the technology.
The analysis of these digital platforms allowed to offer some recommendations to practitioners and to show the
important potential future impact of these sustainable business models on the economy and the environment.
