This study demonstrates that supporting people's basic needs for competence, relatedness, and autonomy is critically important for virtually all aspects of individual and societal functioning. Chapters describe Self-determination Theory's six mini-theories and what they postulate about intinsic motivation, internalization, individual differences, basic needs, goals and aspirations, and close relationships. Applying SDT to child and adolescent social development, chapters examine the impact of differen,t parenting and educational practices, and take a fresh look at processes of identity formation and developmental psychotherapy, sport, and the workplace, including discussions of exemplary SDT-informed practices.
