This thesis investigates the key financial and operational factors that influence the profitability
of football clubs, addressing the critical question: What are the key financial and operational
factors that influence the profitability of football clubs? Utilizing a sample of European football
clubs, the study employs regression and correlation analyses to determine the impact of various
variables on profitability metrics such as net income, profit margin, and changes in net income.
The research examines the influence of different revenue streams (broadcasting, matchday, and
commercial revenues), wage management, investment in long-term assets (Property, Plant, and
Equipment), capital structure, liquidity, shareholder investment, and leadership stability. The
findings reveal that while broadcasting revenue is the revenue stream that contributes the most
to the bottom line, it is not sufficient to ensure profitability. Effective wage management and
strategic investments in Property, Plant, and Equipment are crucial for enhancing financial
performance. Maintaining a strong equity base and adequate liquidity also play vital roles in
ensuring financial stability and profitability. Furthermore, the study highlights the importance
of stable leadership and prudent shareholder investment in achieving sustainable profitability.
The research underscores the complexity of achieving financial success in football clubs,
highlighting the need for a balanced approach that integrates revenue growth with cost control,
strategic investments, and prudent financial practices. The role of regulatory frameworks is also
examined for their impact on promoting fiscal responsibility and profitability within the
industry. By providing a comprehensive analysis of the factors influencing profitability, this
thesis offers valuable insights for club managers, stakeholders, and investors. The findings
contribute to a broader understanding of football club management and the highly competitive
and commercially driven football industry.
