This thesis conducts a comparative analysis of venture capital ecosystems in Italy and France,
focusing on key factors and opportunities. The main objective is to identify the differences
between the two countries in the current state of the sector and to understand how different
elements influence its development.
Through semi-structured interviews with experts in the sector of Italy and France, state
intervention through policies and through direct and indirect investments, the general economic
environment and the role of universities were identified as the four most relevant factors in the
development of the ecosystem. Following an analysis of the current state of the sector, a
qualitative and quantitative investigation was conducted for each of these elements on the basis
of available data. The data utilized mainly came from public sources such as industry reports
and online databases.
The analysis shows that, despite the significant progress made by Italy in recent years in the
development of the sector, it is still significantly behind France. On each of the four relevant
factors, Italy still lags France and there is still room for development.
In conclusion, this thesis emphasises the need for Italy to implement further reforms and
targeted investments to stimulate its venture capital ecosystem, building on the successful
policies and strategies adopted in France.
