"This thesis aims to investigate how sustainability is perceived and taught in the Global North and South, focusing on a comparative case study of two renowned business schools: IIM-Calcutta in India (representing the Global South) and ESCP Business School in Europe (representing the Global North). By examining these distinct contexts, the research seeks to identify similarities, differences, and questions pertaining to the perception and teaching of sustainability.
In the research field there is a growing number of studies analyzing and assessing school’s sustainability performance as well as the way they teach sustainability. Through this master thesis I wanted to analyze the difference in perception and in teaching between an Indian business school and a French business school.
The study aims to address several questions and research gaps.
First, it is undeniably important to assess how cultural, social, and economic factors do shape the perception and understanding of sustainability in the Global North and South. Then, there are different pedagogical approaches assessing which teaching methodologies and strategies are utilized by IIM-Calcutta and ESCP Business School to effectively teach sustainability knowledge and skills to their students. Finally, schools face challenges in how they want to teach and promote sustainability but also in how to improve their teaching to really encompass all the issues around sustainability".
