"Achieving legitimacy as an outsider is often a challenging endeavour. However, the establishment of collaborative circles can significantly contribute to the legitimation process.
This research investigates the impact of collaborative circles on the legitimization of outsiders using the case of Rosa Bonheur, an emblematic painter of the 19th century. Through a single case study approach that incorporates theoretical frameworks and historical data, we address the question: How do collaborative circles contribute to the legitimation of outsiders? Our analysis reveals two key insights. Firstly, we identify collaborative circles as a crucial strategy that initiates a legitimation process for outsiders. These circles serve as a support system, providing emotional, cognitive, and material resources needed to challenge existing norms and gain recognition. Secondly, we emphasize the significance of gender, specifically for women artists, in addressing the historical discrimination they face within the artistic sector. By unveiling the transformative power of collaborative circles, this master's thesis highlights how individuals can strategically cultivate these networks to navigate the obstacles of legitimation and increase their prospects of recognition and acceptance as outsiders in their respective domains."
