La fabrique de l’intelligence artificielle, un pré-carré industriel ? : Analyse des collaborations académie-industrie sur GitHub

L’intelligence artificielle (IA) est l’un des domaines de recherche attirant le plus d’investissements industriels. L’influence de ces derniers sur la recherche académique est aujourd’hui bien établie, notamment en ce qui concerne les thématiques étudiées, mais peu de travaux ont abordé leurs impacts sur les pratiques des chercheurs. Si certains auteurs suggèrent une indifférenciation et une coordination croissantes entre les acteurs issus des mondes académique et industriel, notre étude, fondée sur une analyse approfondie de projets de développement logiciel, nuance ce constat. En nous concentrant sur cinq projets hébergés sur la plateforme GitHub et en les analysant à la lumière de critères formels proposés par E. Lamy et T. Shinn (2006), nous avons mis en lumière de réelles différences dans les formes d’engagement au sein des projets. Ces observations traduisent une coordination limitée ou « émergente » entre les acteurs de ces deux mondes et remettent en question la prégnance du « cadrage industriel » dans le domaine de l’IA.Artificial intelligence (AI) is one of the research fields attracting the most industrial funding. Although some of the effects of these investments, notably regarding the research topics, are well established, few studies have examined the impact of this industrial engagement on researchers’ practices. In this regard, some authors suggest that such engagement drives a convergence in the ethos and practices of academic and industrial actors, enabling better coordination between the two. However, our study, based on an in-depth analysis of a sample of software development projects, challenges this idea. In this work, we analyzed five projects hosted on the GitHub platform using formal criteria from E. Lamy and T. Shinn (2006). Our analysis reveals significant differences in the forms of engagement with the projects. These findings suggest a limited or “emerging” form of coordination between these actors of these two worlds and call into question the significance of the “industrial framing” within the field of AI.
