The topic of industry and its evolution over time to Industry 4.0 is much discussed and analysed in academic research. In particular, many recent studies analyse in detail the nine technologies that enable Industry 4.0. However, few studies take into account the characteristics of the companies in which they are embedded and the ecosystem in which they are immersed.
The aim of this research is to close the gap in the literature and analyse Industry 4.0 in the context of Italian small and medium-sized enterprises. In particular, by conducting one-to-one interviews with digitisation experts, useful information was gathered to conduct a critical and in-depth analysis of the subject. The purpose of this analysis is to highlight the drivers that have led Italian SMEs to make significant investments in digitalization and the obstacles encountered in the implementation of Industry 4.0 enabling technologies. The data collected through the semi-structured interviews were not simply reported. In fact, an in-depth analysis of the results was carried out, making comparisons between companies based on their number of employees, date of foundation and type of product offered in the market.
