This study presents a comparative analysis of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) strategies and transparency in CSR reporting within the fashion industries of China and the United States of America. The research aims to investigate the main similarities and differences in CSR approaches across two major markets and to understand how cultural factors, market expectations, and regulatory landscapes influence corporate social responsibility practices. A mixed-method approach was employed, combining qualitative data from semi-structured interviews with CSR officers from leading fashion companies, Levi Strauss & Co., The North Face, Li-Ning, and Anta Sports, and quantitative data gathered from consumer expectations surveys.
The findings reveal that while both regions prioritize CSR, their approaches are shaped by distinct cultural, regulatory, and market-driven factors. Chinese CSR strategies are predominantly driven by regulatory frameworks and cultural values emphasizing collective well-being, while in the USA, market forces and consumer expectations play a critical role. Environmental sustainability and social responsibility are prioritized in both regions; however, the two markets exhibit differing motivational drivers. Chinese corporations focus on regulatory compliance and community development, while their American counterparts emphasize their focus on diversity, ethics, and inclusivity impact primarily driven by consumer demand. The analysis highlights the critical role of each influential factor in shaping CSR practices, revealing distinct approaches between China’s compliance-driven strategies and the USA’s market-driven transparency and ethical consumerism.
This thesis contributes to the broader understanding of CSR in the global fashion industry by highlighting the importance of tailoring strategies to local contexts and providing actionable recommendations for enhancing CSR efforts in both markets.
