This thesis explores the integration of environmental sustainability in the value chain of a business.
First, by tracing the concept evolution, different frameworks, and the critical role businesses play
in achieving sustainable outcomes. The study delves into the drivers and challenges businesses
face in embedding sustainability into their operations, with a focus on value creation for
stakeholders and the integration of technological advancements in sustainable development.
An in-depth examination of sustainability's environmental dimensions across various value chain
functions, including procurement, research and development, production, logistics, and after-sales
services, provides a foundation for understanding its multifaceted impact. The research
methodology and questions are outlined to guide the empirical investigation.
Then, the study focuses on the United Arab Emirates (UAE), exploring its economic dynamics,
environmental challenges, and its strategic vision for sustainability. It evaluates the sustainable
behaviour of UAE consumers, highlighting their influence on the market.
The literature review will be linked to two case studies on Arla Foods Middle East and Nestle
MENA, pioneers of sustainability practices in the gulf region. These case studies aim to understand
the practical application of sustainability concepts in business operations within the context of a
rapidly emerging market.
Finally, the thesis offers practical implications and recommendations for enhancing environmental
sustainability within businesses in UAE. The findings are intended to inform business leaders, and
stakeholders on effective sustainability practices and underline the potential for corporate
contributions to global sustainability goals.
