This chart shows the share of households in Great Britain with internet access from 1998 to 2019. Figures released this week by the Office for National Statistics provide an interesting look at how the internet grew in Great Britain. Back in 1998, 13 percent of households were forward thinking enough to hook their homes up to the web. At the time there were only 2.4 million websites to browse, compared to today's 1.7 billion. Access to these sites is now available in 93 percent of households, as the internet penetration rate gradually approaches its saturation point
