Abstract
This thesis explores the shifting landscape of the music industry, particularly the evolution of artist promotion and discovery, and the changing power dynamics influenced by streaming platforms and social media. It highlights the significant role of algorithms in enhancing artist visibility on platforms like Spotify and TikTok, which have democratized access to global audiences. To address the growing reliance on algorithms and the passive consumption trend on streaming platforms, the thesis proposes a gamified playlist model designed to encourage organic artist discovery.
The gamified playlist system introduces innovative incentives for discovering emerging artists, utilizing gamification mechanics to create a more diverse and organic music discovery environment. Despite recognizing challenges such as the need for long-term studies, genre biases, and limitations due to data set constraints and short implementation periods, the research offers solutions. These include genre-specific leaderboards and transparency in algorithm methodology and data sources to foster trust and accountability.
The conclusion emphasizes that while the gamified playlist system has the potential to disrupt traditional power structures and promote inclusivity in the music ecosystem, its success hinges on meticulous design and implementation. By fostering active participation and emotional engagement in the music discovery process, gamification can boost user involvement and support for emerging artists. Future research should aim at refining these mechanisms and exploring alternative metrics to ensure a fair and effective music discovery platform.
